This is a key quote. Right now, and through the 2020s and 2030s, the future of humanity, and certainly civilization is based on the new that must be created to replace the old. We must reinvent capitalism and democracy, not just argue within them. We must begin to understand and then create a global economy that is “no growth”. We must create new forms of transportation, energy, education, brain-centric health care and non-consumption.
Another way to state this is that we have entered the golden age of design, the age of creativity. We need to create completely new ways of doing things, thinking about things and what we value.
The “old” doesn’t need to be fixed as much as it needs to be replaced by the “new”. This is one of those transition moments in history when a new order, across most of human endeavor is ahead. Think of the time from 1875-1925. What reality was in 1875 was distant in the rear-view mirror of 1925. Candles to electricity / horse and buggy to internal combustion engine/chamber pots to indoor plumbing/ the one room schoolhouse to modern high schools/ the family farm to working in a factory.
We now must take the huge steps to replace what is, with what will be. Not repair the broken.

Informing or Communicate?
A dominant business mindset holds that we are in an Information Age and have been so far for a number of years. Now, that we have become Information Age organizations, we need to become Communication Age organizations.
Burrus points out that there is a difference between informing and communicating. Informing is one-way. Communicating on the other hand, is two-way. He often asks his audiences if their organizations are good at informing and communication. The inevitable answer is: We're really at the top of our game when it comes to informing, but communicating is another matter entirely. Th follow up question offers and equally intriguing answer: Do you need to be far better at communication? Absolutely!
