The Four Seasons of Your Professional Life

Life is like the changing seasons. They are set and do not change. However, we can change ourselves.
- Winter: You must learn how to survive the winters of your life.
Use the winter time to get stronger, wiser, better. The winter season always comes after a harvest.
Reflect on a winter you’ve had, a loss or set back you have experienced. What did you do, what did you learn and how will you handle your next “winter” season?
- Spring: While not a guarantee, better days are coming.
You must take advantage of another opportunity and the chance for a new beginning.
Describe a spring you have had or may be experiencing now. What did you do or what will you do to prepare for better days?
- Summer: A time to nurture and protect the “seeds” you have sown.
We must nourish our positive values and defeat the negative forces that come into our life.
Think of an example of a summer, a time of planning, learning and protecting your attitude and talents.
- Fall: Harvest time.
Jim advises that two things will wreck your chances for the future (bountiful harvest)—impatience and greed. Greed tends to expect something for nothing. Patience is allowing the plan to play out appropriately.
Reflect on a bountiful harvest you have had. What was it, how did you handle it? What harvest are you anticipating that will come from the seeds planted in the spring and the protecting and nurturing you did in the summer?
Denis Waitley, highly acclaimed authority on personal development, advises us to think of the four seasons of the year as 90-day cycles. Imagine what you can accomplish in a three month period with thorough planning, preparation and focused concentration. Set the goal, gather the resources and execute each day.
